Yoo Seung Ho, Hyeri, Byun Woo Seok, And Kang Mina Pick Their Favorite Scenes From “Moonshine”

With KBS’s “Moonshine” taking a break this past week due to the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the actors helped ease the wait by sharing their favorite scenes so far!

“Moonshine” is a historical drama set in the Joseon era, during the time when prohibition laws were at their strongest. It stars Yoo Seung Ho as Nam Young, Joseon’s greatest inspector who is known for living a principled life, and Hyeri as Kang Ro Seo, a struggling aristocrat who starts making illegal alcohol in order to support her family. Byun Woo Seok co-stars as Lee Pyo, the crown prince who secretly sneaks out to drink alcohol, and Kang Mina as Han Ae Jin, the beloved only daughter of a high-ranking noble family.

Yoo Seung Ho – Change of heart

For his favorite scene, Yoo Seung Ho picked the one in which his character Nam Young begins to experience a change of heart toward Kang Ro Seo. He is a scholarly young man who has only learned about the world through books, and orders his life according to rules and principles. His life changes when he meets Kang Ro Seo and falls in love with her.

The actor said, “I think that Nam Young shows that he’s changing through his attitude toward Kang Ro Seo, rather than his words. When he makes decisions, he shows a side of himself that’s different from before. When he and Ro Seo were trapped in the well, he began to change how he thought about Ro Seo and also about himself.”

In this scene, which occurred in episode 9, Nam Young asked Ro Seo why she was making illegal alcohol for money. Before, he had only ever gotten angry with her for breaking the law instead of trying to understand why she was throwing herself into such dangerous and difficult work. Ro Seo responds to this outreach by replying honestly that she was looking for any way out of her family’s hopeless financial situation. In contrast to Nam Young, Ro Seo has always been a woman of action rather than words, but it’s her honest confession that brings her closer to Nam Young.

Hyeri – Standing up for herself

Kang Ro Seo is a “girl crush” character who upends everything that a traditional Joseon woman is supposed to be like, making illegal alcohol with her own hands in an era of prohibition. In episode 7, she has a conversation with Dae Mo (Jung Young Joo), a major player in the world of illegal alcohol in Gwangju. Ro Seo became a moonshine maker because of the debt her brother incurred, while Dae Mo came to Hanyang (the capital) in search of her son. The two of them made a deal and drank to their new partnership late at night, sharing their troubles over the strict prohibition laws and the pain of losing their families.

But when Dae Mo tells Ro Seo to stop doing the dangerous work of making illegal alcohol, Ro Seo replies with her trademark spirit. “It makes me feel bad,” she said. “Why do I have to get your permission to do something that even the country won’t allow me to do?” Hyeri said, “This line shows Ro Seo’s personality the best. An ordinary person wouldn’t even imagine being able to do a deal with the biggest gibang in Hanyang, but Ro Seo is so confident in herself that she made it possible.”

Byun Woo Seok – Thoughts on prohibition

Byun Woo Seok’s charater, Lee Pyo, is a crown prince who is outstanding in looks and martial arts but cannot be bothered with books or scholarship. He is also a free spirit who sneaks out of the palace to go out drinking when the royal family is supposed to uphold the laws on prohibition.

In episode 4, Nam Young and Lee Pyo have a confrontation about prohibition and Lee Pyo’s drinking habits. Nam Young insists on the importance of rules and laws, but Lee Pyo retorts, “The thing about prohibition is that it’s just a justification. It’s just a justification that looks good on paper to show that we’re not wasting rice.” This not only sums up Lee Pyo’s attitude to the strict prohibition laws but also sums up the drama’s general message over true principles versus man-made laws.

Kang Mina – Heartfelt confession

Kang Mina’s character, Han Ae Jin, is the only child, the only daughter of the Minister of War. On the surface, she seems to be an immature child who demands love and wants a handsome husband, but in reality she is very frustrated with the restrictions she faces as a woman. Since she has no choice but to marry, she resolves that she’ll at least make her own choice of husband. Even when Nam Young makes her an offer of marriage, she doesn’t waver in her determination to pursue Lee Pyo.

In episode 8, Han Ae Jin confesses her feelings to Lee Pyo, saying, “Don’t waste that precious heart of yours. Give it to me. I’ll preciously cherish it.” Kang Mina said, “Even though the line is very sad and pathetic, it made a deep impression on me for its earnestness.” After Han Ae Jin becomes the crown princess, it remains to be seen how her relationship will Lee Pyo will end.
