Oct 15, 2022

May It Please the Court episode 8 starts at the office with a tired Chak-hee coming back from a rather stressful spying operation. She, however, is more frustrated with Kyung-jil’s accusations against Si-baek and refuses to believe that he’d kill someone. But she also wonders why he would threaten Jae-ho like that if what the detective is saying is true.

Meanwhile, Kyung-jil gets the news of Jae-ho’s death right after she hands over the two cups to the forensic department. As it turns out, Jae-ho didn’t exactly die and is still alive but is in pretty bad shape. Jae-geun is of the opinion that they need to arrest Si-baek immediately, but unfortunately, they don’t have enough evidence. Meanwhile, Gi-do asks his assistant to ask Chak-hee to meet him after learning that she took Jae-ho’s files from them.

Gi-do gets a visit from Dae-hyeon, who gives him Si-baek’s details as he’s going to be the ‘replacement’. Gi-do mentions that Si-baek and Hee-soo have the same eyes. Dae-hyeon isn’t able to give Gi-do enough information about Si-baek’s past, and when Gi-do gets the news that Jae-ho has been attacked, he notes that the police chief is really interested to stay alive, unlike the others.

In the car, Chak-hee tries to get Si-baek to say something about Jae-ho’s attack but isn’t able to get much out of him. When he drops her off at the party office, both of them are left a bit shocked at the campaign posters, which truly, look awful. Once inside, Gi-do asks her not to get into the case since she will end up poking a bear. He further asks her to keep an eye on Yi-yeon and enquires whether Si-baek would be interested to join him in his campaign.

It’s a confusing set of things that Gi-do brings up and that night, she is even more confused about what to do with the retrial. Unfortunately, all that takes a backstep when she starts getting harassed and called a murderer and some self-Googling makes her feel even worse about the situation that she is in.

She later goes to meet Yi-yeon and the two get into another fight. Chak-hee’s questions fall on deaf ears, however, and Yi-yeon simply asks her to go get her answers from the person whom she loves so much. Meanwhile, Dae-hyeon goes to meet Si-baek and asks him to join the party, but, as expected, he refuses to entertain him. At Jangsan, Gi-do seems ok with Si-baek’s refusal and asks Dae-hyeon to find out out what who reported about Yi-yeon.

As Chak-hee walks back home that night, she is harassed by a bunch of men who ask actually have the audacity to manhandle her in the middle of the road. Of course, Si-baek gets there just when things get a bit too heated and beats the shit out of the kids. His act of kindness makes the two of them grow closer to each other as he comforts a scared and shaken Chak-hee.

The next day, Chak-hee comes out with a spring in her step, and, in a rather celebratory manner, she reports Do-chang for kidnapping a minor after he pays everyone 300 million won. At Jangsan, it turns out that Gi-do is the one who asked Chak-hee to be doxxed, and he later falsely assures Chak-hee that Jangsan’s legal team will take care of further issues. He then asks her to bring Si-baek to a charity event that he will be attending, and it’s unsure whether Chak-hee truly believes every word that Gi-do is saying or not.

That night, Chi-sik tells Dal-jae that Dong-pil was the one who made him the way he is now and that he must find him out to get his revenge. The next day, Chak-hee and Si-baek go off to the children’s home, and he is left shocked when he sees Byung-chun and remembers him from when he was young – did Byung-chun have something to do with Si-baek’s father’s death? Either way, Si-baek is left absolutely infuriated with Chak-hee and asks her how long she plans on being one of Jangsan’s people?

When it comes time to meet Gi-do, Si-baek is absolutely icy but agrees to hear him out. He puts forth some very interesting demands that Gi-do agrees with and promises to donate to the free legal aid clinic if he wins the election.

It seems like the idea of being able to use Gi-do makes him rather happy. However, there’s icy tension in the way he handles himself around Byung-chun and Gi-do. Afterwards, he goes to meet Chi-sik and tells him everything that happened that day and asks him to only focus on the restaurant. Chi-sik’s face shows shock and confusion, but he doesn’t talk about it anymore.

Si-baek later goes to meet Gi-do, who hands over the case files that Si-baek demanded of him. With this out of the way, Gi-do asks him for an interview, and Si-baek also agrees to support him in the campaign moving forward. Meanwhile, Kyung-jil finds out that the DNA analysis came back with a match – and Si-baek is arrested right after.

At the police station, Kyung-jil isn’t able to find cracks in Si-baek’s statements, and her work is made more difficult when Chak-hee refuses to change her alibi. Later on, when Kyung-jil asks him about his DNA being found at the scene of the crime, he asks her whether her illegally-obtained DNA takes precedence over his alibi. Plus, why was only his DNA being singled out among a sea of others? In the end, the warrant is also rejected.

Once outside, he finds Chak-hee asleep while waiting for him. Outside the precinct, she asks him whether he killed all of them, and he tells her that he did, leaving her shocked.

May It Please the Court Episode 8 Review

Well, that took a turn – although I am not convinced that the answer to the mystery is that simple, Si-baek’s simple admission of guilt feels like a punch to the gut and just like Chak-hee, we are left rather shocked as well.

It’s interesting how Chak-hee’s character has gone through a much-needed change. Although she is quite naïve still, she’s stopped being as much of a brat as before, and it’s nice to see her new position bringing about a positive change in her life.
