Recap Korean Drama "May It Please the Court 2022" Episode 5

Oct 5, 2022

May It Please the Court episode 5 starts with Chak-hee getting up after a fun drunk night at Si-baek’s place wearing his clothes but rather cognisant of where she is. She remembers everything, but the sheer embarrassment of the situation pushes her to tell him that she remembers nothing and Si-baek can’t believe what she is saying.

At work, Chak-hee is filled with regret at what she did last night and even more so when Young-soo tells her that “her friend” probably got trashed and “the guy” didn’t have an option but to get her out of her clothes and take her home.

Meanwhile, the police find Seok-gu’s body beside the golfing area pond and surmise that it’s the same person who killed Hyun-sik. Just then, Yoo Kyung-jin joins the team and, within the next few hours, tells Jung Jae-geun off for spinning a wild tale against Si-baek and Chak-hee without any proof. On the other hand, hearing of Seok-gu’s death makes Ha-ran rather uncomfortable as she, it seems, begins to suspect her husband.

Gi-do, however, has other things to think about – the campaign funds are becoming problematic, with more and more people dying. Plus, the fact that both Gi-do and Dae-hyun are keeping secrets from each other doesn’t help. When Gi-do goes to meet the police chief, he is rather scared that if these murders turn into a serial murder investigation, he won’t be able to keep things quiet. In that way, everyone will uncover his corrupt practices, and things will look bleak for him.

Gi-do asks him to keep quiet and hold out until the elections get over – there are bigger problems to think about than something this bland and unnecessary. Furthermore, Gi-do assures him that if he does as asked, the killer will be caught, regardless of whether it’s the real person or not.

On the other hand, Dal-jae wakes up with his hands tied behind his back and looking rather disoriented. He frees himself using a box cutter and then calls out to his wife. With no one around, he finds a note asking him to call a number if he wants to know about his wife. When he calls on the number, they tell him that his wife died 6 months ago. At Backwoods Homemade Dumplings, Si-baek finds some curious rolls of duct tape at the restaurant.

Chak-hee, meanwhile, is stuck with a case wherein her client seems to be having some sort of mental breakdown. After a rather silly court scene, Chak-hee gets called to her grandfather’s vacation home while Si-baek delivers pizza to the orphanage using the same orange rope that we see before.

At the vacation home, Chak-hee remembers her grandmother being taken away in an ambulance after her death. In the present, Chak-hee helps Byung-chun learn how to text, while Si-baek learns about Byung-chun’s philanthropic endeavours in the orphanage and tells Kang-il that he doesn’t know Chak-hee, one of their former residents.

Later on, Ha-ran gets a call from her daughter Yi-yeon asking for money. The situation between the two seems tense, and she seems heartbroken at her daughter’s relationship with her. It doesn’t help that Gi-do comes in at that moment to threaten his wife to join him in his quest to get power or else things will turn ugly for him.

The next day, detective Kyung-jin goes to Hyun-sik’s vacation home to assess the situation and find further clues – she figures that the assailant was probably someone the victim already knew since there are no signs of forced entry. She realises that someone might have followed Si-baek and knew his routines thoroughly.

On the other hand, at the law office, Yi-yeon makes a comeback, and straight-up goes to strangle Chak-hee after blaming her for her addiction issues. Si-baek stops her from actually murdering Chak-hee and later learns about her background. Chak-hee, however, is as clueless as Si-baek about why she would attack her or why she came to them instead of Jangsan’s countless lawyers. That night, as Gi-do puts his men to find his daughter, Yi-yeon and Chak-hee’s father share a tender moment wherein she asks him whether he misses his daughter.

Meanwhile, Gi-do meets Byung-chun, who asks him why he desperately wants the golden pin since he doesn’t have long to live and asks him never to forget that covering something up doesn’t mean that the situation is resolved. At the same time, Kyung-jin finds some shocking evidence thanks to CCTV footage – she realises that Si-baek has been tailing Hyun-sik for quite some time before his murder.

On the other hand, Chak-hee is shocked to learn that Soon-young’s kids have been sent off to the same children’s home where they grew up. She goes there to deliver the birthday gifts to one of her children, and it seems like there’s some tension between Kang-il and her. Our suspicions are proved right when he picks up one of the kids from their bed and carries them with him like a creep.

The next scene is of the murderer dragging Kang-il by his collar to the ocean and murdering him in the water.

I am getting thrown off a bit with each passing episode as the story gets more and more watered down. I think the mystery is rather delicious, but the series spends so much time talking about unnecessary things that you sort of lose interest in the narrative.

On top of that, it focuses on Chak-hee being a brat more than the mystery that it is presenting. It also doesn’t help that May It Please the Court seems like somewhat of a repetition of Why Her? and honestly, that K-drama did so much better at holding on to our interest. At least the characters weren’t insufferable.

I enjoy the interactions that Chak-hee has with Byung-chun and Si-baek, although I must say that the banter between her and Si-baek loses charm quite soon. However, it’s not enough to keep things moving. The glacial pacing doesn’t help, even though there’s a murder in almost every episode. It’s sad that in spite of people getting literally murdered, there isn’t enough going for it.
