Sep 28, 2022

May It Please the Court episode 4 picks up right where we left off last time, with Si-baek saving Chak-hee from imminent death. He passes out after they fall from the ledge, and when he comes to, he tries to scare her by telling her that he doesn’t remember who he is. Regardless, they have a laugh together afterwards, but the happiness soon evaporates when she realises that Si-baek is her neighbour.

She tries to throw him out for not carpooling with her and not telling her that he is her neighbour but not before he gets a thank you from her first. The next day, when he tries to go to work, Chak-hee tells him that he will give her a ride from that day and that she will give him a reason to hate her.

Meanwhile, Gi-do goes to talk to Seok-gu, who desperately needs Ma-ra to help him with the construction of a mall. However, Gi-do needs help to figure out who killed Hyun-sik. On the other hand, Chi-sik pacifies a desperate Dai-jae and it feels like there’s something more to this story than meets the eye.

At the office, Young-soo gives Chak-hee a file from the prosecutor’s office that mentions that she should handle a birth registration. Chak-hee refuses to take care of it at first but relents later on. It’s a case about a woman who abandoned two of her babies, a story that hits a bit close to home for Chak-hee, whose own father abandoned her as well.

Meanwhile, at Kumshin Electric Ha-ra meets Seok-gu with an offer that seems great for him. Only that, she needs to know what he knows about Gi-do’s involvement in Hyun-sik’s death. With an irresistible offer now in his hand, Seok-gu has a lot to think about, and so does Ha-ra.

Chak-hee, on the other hand, goes to meet Yu-jin, her client and tells her that she will have to serve jail time since this is her second offence. However, she does give her the number of a baker who will help her after she gets released. She later decides to register the baby’s birth as well and works relentlessly to do a good job, even naming the baby herself.

The next morning, she goes out to work with a spring in her step. However, it’s clear that she doesn’t really feel that deeply since she still calls the journalist to talk about such a great job she has done. Anyway, she’s further left annoyed when she realises that Si-baek left without picking her up.

Si-baek has work outside the office that day, which boils down to him going to save a young boy from being molested by a predator on the pretext of helping him free the kid’s mother. As Jun-woo sits there looking uncomfortable and scared, Si-baek beats the guy black and blue. He turns out to be Seok-gu’s son, and they all end up in the police station.

Although Si-baek is absolutely fine, Do-chang is bleeding all over. However, Si-baek had called her over to take Jun-woo to her place and promises to tie up everything at the station as soon as possible. That night, a concerned Chak-hee asks Si-baek what happened at the station, and he assures her that Do-chang has settled. Plus, he also asks her to take on Jun-woo’s case, which she firmly refuses to do.

The next day at work, however, Si-baek tries to make Chak-hee relent to his demands, but she still doesn’t give in. Only when the journalist calls her for a special feature that she gets interested in the case, if only so that she gets to get away. As it turns out, Jun-woo’s mother wanted to get her unpaid wages to afford her son’s surgery. But unfortunately, since Do-chang is a piece of crap, along with being a predator, he refuses to pay her.

However, when she finds a large sum of money in his wardrobe, she steals it and thus gets into trouble.

Either way, she refuses to take on the case since they are sure to lose it, but, Jun-woo’s little gift changes things for her and the next time we see all of them walk down to change the indictment and win the case. In court, after a rather difficult discussion, wherein Chak-hee refuses to give up until the prosecutor changes the indictment, and after a rather stretched-out hearing, they finally make the prosecutor relent with the help of the judge.

After some brief celebration, Chak-hee takes up on Si-baek’s offer to thank her and asks him to treat her with pork rinds and soju. On the other hand, Seok-gu beats the crap out of Do-chang, blaming him for not getting rid of the kid better.

That night, Seok-gu, relaxing at a resort, gets murdered in a similar fashion as Hyuk-sil, but not before he throws up on the murderer’s pants.

The next morning, Chak-hee wakes up in Si-baek’s home and sees a similar pair of pants getting washed, with a vomit stain on it.

I like how the series is trying to keep us in the loop about whether or not Si-baek is the one who is killing all of these people. Let’s face it, I am sure they are going to show in the next episode that Chak-hee was the one who threw up on him and not Seok-gu.

To be honest, at this point, I think that it’s Chi-sik who is the murderer, trying to take some revenge on these people for doing something to Dai-jae.

Anyway, predictions aside, I think I enjoyed this episode a bit more, if only because we saw a lot of Chak-hee’s past acquaintances and what kind of people they are. There’s something more going on behind the scenes that we are not being shown, and I am waiting for the day that happens. Also, waiting for the day Chak-hee isn’t an absolute brat who only thinks about herself.

I am, however, quite enjoying the flashbacks to her past, which help her make moral decisions in the present. They prove to be rather humane moments for her.
