My Happy Ending (2023) K Drama Episode 4

Jan 11, 2024

Episode 4 of My Happy Ending starts with Soon-young/Chi-young waking up in bed with Yoon-jin. He turns off the camera on his phone that was filming him hooking up with the artist.

The episode then moves back to where we left off with Jae-won rushing home to check up on Ah-rin. Soon-young drives Jae-won back and Jae-won calls Ah-rin’s nanny despite her day off. She asks the nanny to stay with Ah-rin and to make sure the little girl is okay.

Once they get home, the nanny tells Jae-won that Ah-rin has already fallen asleep after tiring herself from playing. Jae-won accuses Soon-young of leaving Ah-rin alone. Soon-young is confused and accuses Jae-won of texting him, asking him to come see her at the Dereve office.

Jae-won asks Soon-young about Chi-young and wonders what her husband’s twin brother is up to. Soon-young states that he has not been in touch with his twin since they split because of their parent’s divorce when they were 13. He adds that Jae-won and Ah-rin are his only family and Jae-won asks him to always remember this.

At the same time, Yoon-jin is at a cafe, sketching a photo of Ah-rin. She tells the waitress that the girl in the picture is her daughter. A flashback shows Yoon-jin clutching her stomach at a hospital as she sobs. At Dereve, the IT Head Yoo tells Tae-oh that the person texting Seung-kyu was Chi-young.

Meanwhile, Jae-won gets Chi-young’s address from Mr Han. Jae-won shows up at the house and talks to one of Chi-young’s neighbours. She learns that Chi-young had been admitted to a big hospital in the city because he was very ill. Just then Jae-won gets a call from Ah-rin who calls her mother home because she is ill.

At the house, Soon-young is watching Psychiatrist Se-kyeong’s interview in the news where she is discussing the severity of bipolar disorders. Just then, Jae-won returns home and refuses to answer any of Soon-young’s questions. She chooses to spend time with Ah-rin and puts her little girl to bed.

The mother-daughter duo talk about how they would like to spend their time over the holidays. That night, Secretary Kim calls Jae-won to tell her about Seong-kyu’s accident. Jae-won calls Tae-oh and asks to chat with him about Seong-kyu’s involvement in the attacks that were happening to her.

Tae-oh asks Jae-won to go to the cops to make sure she is safe but Jae-won reveals how she is worried about the reputation of her family and her business being at stake. Tae-oh finally tells Jae-won that Seong-kyu is her stalker and tells her all about his involvement with Chi-young.

Jae-won is worried by the revelation and walks back home. When some passersby recognise her, she goes inside a coffee shop to calm herself down. She thinks about all the lies around her and suffers a panic attack.

Jae-won grabs a glass of iced coffee but ends up dropping it on the floor due to traumatic flashbacks from her childhood. She picks up a piece of the shattered glass and clutches it in her fist, causing her hand to bleed.

A flashback shows a younger Jae-won leaving the psychiatrist’s clinic with Chang-suk waiting outside for her. As she is leaving the clinic, her classmate looks at her and avoids eye contact. Embarrassed by her condition, Jae-won hides herself in the girl’s bathroom.

She overhears the girl telling another one of their classmates all about Jae-won’s visit to the psychiatric clinic. Jae-won gets upset and starts slitting her wrist with a blade. She leaves the stall and runs into Yoon-jin who picks up the blade Jae-won dropped by accident. Yoon-jin notices Jae-won’s bloodstained sleeve and offers her a change of uniform.

Jae-won joins Yoon-jin in the art room and is conscious of the slit on her wrist. Yoon-jin shows Jae-won the bruise on her thigh and states that she got it from her father beating her up for not winning the first prize at the art competition. Young Yoon-jin tries to cheer Young Jae-won up and the two become friends.

Present-day Jae-won is with Se-kyeong who dresses the bruise on her palm. She asks Jae-won about the hunch she had about Chi-young. The next day, Mr Han calls Jae-won to tell her that Chi-young suffered from chronic Lung disease during his last visit to the clinic mentioned by his neighbour. Soon-young/Chi-young watches Mr Han leave the clinic.

He then rushes home only to see the house being set up with CCTV cameras. Jae-won refuses to answer Soon-young when he asks what she is up to. She then goes to see Yoon-jin at the Dereve office and asks about her new lover. Without revealing his identity, Yoon-jin tells Jae-won that she is dating an office worker and adds that seeing her boyfriend would leave her shocked.

Tae-oh waits for Seong-kyu to wake up in his hospital bed. He visits Soon-young at the university and spots a photo of the professor with Seong-kyu. Tae-oh tells Soon-young about Seong-kyu’s accident. Soon-young reveals that he was Seong-kyu’s teacher who recommended him to be hired at Dereve.

Soon-young wonders why Tae-oh is so concerned about the matter and curtly asks him to let the cops do the investigation. At the same time, Jae-won learns that the brake failure was a result of a natural fault. She asks Secretary Kim if she is sure the brakes of her car have not been tampered with.

That night, she goes back home and sees Soon-young playing with Ah-rin. He sees Jae-won coming back in from work and tells her that he’ll be sleeping in his study to give her the space that she needs. Tae-oh is in his studio painting when he thinks about what Jae-won told him about Chi-young. He recalls Chi-young being missing for the last 8 years.

The next day, PR Manager Mr Park tells Mr Kwon that Jae-won’s health has been declining ever since her accident and complains to the Director that their CEO is slacking off. Mr Kwon tells Mr Park that Dereve could only be run by Jae-won and no one else.

Jae-won agrees to film a family variety show at her house to showcase her personal life while being a businesswoman. The producers of the show film a normal morning in Jae-won’s family where Soon-young and Jae-won have a fun conversation with Ah-rin. Jae-won leaves for work while Soon-young continues filming with Ah-rin, taking her to the park.

Meanwhile, Mr Han meets his former colleague, Detective Lee, who mocks him for being kicked out of his job as a cop. Mr Han beats him up to knock some sense into Detective Lee. He asks the cop to look for Chi-young who has been missing for a while. Later that night, Jae-won looks at the broadcast of the variety show that was filmed at her house. She finds it hard to finish watching the episode because of her fake interaction with Soon-young.

The next day, Jae-won’s office is busy all thanks to the publicity from the show. Seeing how Secretary Kim was feeling after her boyfriend – Seung-kyu’s accident, Jae-won asks her to take a break for a while. At the reception, Tae-oh finds Secretary Kim and asks her if she noticed something peculiar about Seung-kyu’s behaviour before the accident.

Kim claims that she had never seen her boyfriend as angry as she was while talking to someone on the phone before his accident. At the same time, Jae-won gets a call from Mr Han who tells her that he has Chi-young’s location. Tae-oh drives Jae-won to the address and she learns that Chi-young has passed away a couple of years ago.

The two drive back to the city and in the car, Jae-won asks Tae-oh to keep the truth about Seung-kyu being her stalker from Secretary Kim. Tae-oh promises to help Jae-won no matter what. The next day, Jae-won wakes up with a newfound confidence. She sends Ah-rin to stay with her stepfather – Chang-suk for the night and visits Yoon-jin.

There, she invites Yoon-jin to attend a family dinner with Yoon-jin’s parents. At dinner, Jae-won keeps up a happy demeanour while Yoon-jin sits in silence. Jae-won tells the Kwon family that she has managed to get Yoon-jin a permanent teaching position at the Art School. Just then, Soon-young shows up at the dinner.

Jae-won asks him to join them but he looks pale. A flashback shows Jae-won checking the spy camera footage and learning that the video had been edited. She also tells Se-kyeong that the hospital staff had revealed that Chi-young’s brother was at his funeral the year before. She concludes that Soon-young was lying to her about something and decides to have him confront Yoon-jin.

Soon-young tries to be curt towards Yoon-jin but Jae-won shocks the table when she declares that Yoon-jin is seeing someone. That night, Yoon-jin goes home frustrated. Meanwhile, Jae-won confronts Soon-young and directly asks him to stop cheating on her with Yoon-jin.

The Episode Review

Every new episode of this show leaves viewers with so many more questions. There are theories already floating on the internet and I am sure there is so much to unfold in the next 12 episodes of this one. So far, it can be assumed that Jae-won (who was born with the name Seo Yoon-jin) had to change her name after she befriended Yoon-jin.

It is also clear that Mr Kwon raised Jae-won as his daughter to fill in for all the achievements that Yoon-jin could not receive. It could also be the reason why he was investing in Jae-won’s business and why he was concerned that she was slacking off now after her accident.

From all the bits and pieces of flashbacks, one can assume that the person who died was Soon-young and not Chi-young. It is also possible that the incident brought back traumatic memories from Jae-won’s teenage years which made her delusional. Yoon-jin likely suffered from a miscarriage or she could be Ah-rin’s real mother who allowed Jae-won to pretend to be the little girl’s mother out of her kind-heartedness.

Right now all we can do is assume but the show is taking a very interesting turn and I can’t wait to watch all of it as the weeks go by.
