The Worst of Evil (2023) K Drama Episode 4 with Ji Chang Wook & Wi Ha Joon

Oct 6, 2023

Episode 4 of The Worst of Evil starts where we left off with Gi-cheul forcing Jun-mo to kill a man he’s captured. Despite various attempts, Jun-mo (pretending to be Seung-ho) is not able to shoot and kill the man which infuriates Gi-cheul. The gang leader’s friends mock Jun-mo and call him good for nothing while the knifer, Seo Jong-ryul, kills Manager Cho.

Gi-cheul talks to his informant and gets Seung-ho’s background information. He learns that there weren’t any records to verify Seung-ho’s past but also finds that Seung-ho has a criminal record for violating the Narcotics Control Act. Jung-bae and Hee-sung talk to Gi-cheul in confidence and ask him to consider the possibility of Seung-ho being a spy and working for the cops.

Jung-bae doubts Eui-jeong and states that it is likely that she had hired Seung-ho to expose the gang. Gi-cheul assumes it was a coincidence and does not make much of Seung-ho’s familiarity with Eui-jeong given his past criminal record. Jung-bae is troubled due to the police flashlight and refuses to believe that Seung-ho was there at the right place at the right time to save Gi-cheul.

Meanwhile, Jong-ryul refuses to let Jun-mo leave. Jung-bae shows up to see Jun-mo and tries to figure out if he is going to snitch on them to the cops. Jung-bae threatens to kill Jun-mo and warns that he is not one of them. The cops discover Manager Cho’s body but refuse to arrest Gi-cheul’s men in order to continue with the investigation.

Chang-sik and Do-hyung convince Eui-jeong to work for them, asking her to win Gi-cheul’s favour as his past lover. Jun-mo is having a really hard time working for Gi-cheul. Eui-jeong takes up the job to help her husband and goes on a date with Gi-cheul. Jun-mo is shocked to see his wife with the gangster.

Do-hyung shows up at the restaurant and tells Jun-mo that Eui-jeong is now working with them as well. He reveals that Eui-jeong is going to try and win Gi-cheul’s favour but Jun-mo is not happy with this arrangement knowing how dangerous the investigation is.

The meal between Gi-cheul and Eui-jeong goes well as they chat about their childhood and reminisce memories of the two of them being together all those years ago. Gi-cheul wonders what their life would be like if it wasn’t for his mother’s crime. The two then leave the restaurant where Jun-mo waits to drive Gi-cheul and Eui-jeong home.

Eui-jeong asks Gi-cheul to take care of Jun-mo (Seung-ho) because he has been through a lot. On the car ride back, Gi-cheul asks Eui-jeong why her cop husband never visited her mother. Eui-jeong lies to Gi-cheul and tells him that she is getting a divorce. Jun-mo is caught off-guard by the comment but Eui-jeong tells Gi-cheul that she was hiding the news from everyone she knows.

Gi-cheul consoles her and once she has left, discusses the news with Jun-mo. He asks Jun-mo to keep the fact that they met Eui-jeong a secret from Jung-bae and Hee-sung as she was a cop. Gi-cheul also tells Jun-mo that he’s planning on seeing Eui-jeong more often now that she is single but the latter does not react despite feeling hurt.

That night, Eui-jeong gets a phone call and she learns that her mother had died in the hospital. Gi-cheul finds out and gives Jun-mo a new suit, asking him to get ready as they are visiting the funeral home. Jun-mo tries to calm down and eventually asks Gi-cheul to go in alone and pay his respects. Eui-jeong notices how Jun-mo is waiting outside and is hurt as well. She offers to go out on a walk with Gi-cheul and thanks Jun-mo (Seung-ho) for visiting.

Just then, Eui-jeong’s nephew shows up and calls out to him. Eui-jeong and Jun-mo are tense while Gi-cheul appears confused. Do-hyung appears out of nowhere and pretends to be Jun-mo, Eui-jeong’s husband. He takes the child inside and Eui-jeong tells Gi-cheul that her family doesn’t know about the divorce.

The two go out to get some fresh air but Do-hyung shows up. He asks how Gi-cheul knew Eui-jeong and the gang leader complains how Do-hyung (Jun-mo) is a bad son-in-law who never visited his sick mother-in-law. This goes on for a bit while the real Jun-mo watches in silence. Do-hyung leaves after a bit and Gi-cheul consoles Eui-jeong before leaving with Jun-mo.

Jun-mo asks Gi-cheul to wait in the car for a bit and runs inside to use the restroom. Instead, he goes to pay his last respects to Eui-jeong’s mother. Do-hyung and Chang-sik refuse to let him go inside as it could draw attention to him. Jun-mo struggles to stay and go back just like that but the two ask him to think about how far they’ve come. He then pays his respects to his mother-in-law from outside the funeral home and leaves.

A flashback shows Jun-mo and his mother-in-law chatting where the woman is very accepting of Jun-mo, unlike Eui-jeong’s brothers and father. Back in the present day, Jun-mo and Gi-cheul have drinks when Gi-cheul asks about Jun-mo (Seung-ho) and his family. The two men bond over drinks and Gi-cheul reveals how his mother killed his abusive father.

Jun-mo tells Gi-cheul that he now wants to make sure he is successful just like the gang leader. Gi-cheul states that he wants to be with Eui-jeong and asks Jun-mo to help him out. In return, Jun-mo asks to join Gi-cheul and his friends on their fishing trips. Gi-cheul is shocked by Jun-mo’s demand and tells him he’ll think over it.

That night, a drunk Jun-mo calls Eui-jeong and leaves her an apologetic voice note. He’s sorry for not being there for her or her mother when they needed him. The next day, Jung-bae calls Jun-mo out and asks him where he was the day before. Jun-mo lies and claims that he and Gi-cheul have been at Tae-ho’s Columbarium. Jung-bae asks Jun-mo to keep reporting on his visits with Gi-cheul and leaves.

Jun-mo then has a smoke with Jong-ryul and the two outsiders bond about the fact that they don’t really get along with the Gangnam boys. They decide to team up and get to the top like Gi-cheul and the others did. At the same time, Dong-hyuk’s right-hand man, Kang Geon meets a gangster from the Jaegeon Group. Kang Geon asks Sung Ki-soo to shake hands with him in order to overthrow Gi-cheul, who was behind his boss’ death.

Jaegeon’s men find one of the members of Gi-cheul’s group and brainwash him, asking him to rat out on their boss. Meanwhile, Hee-sung’s wife goes into delivery, prompting him to opt out of the fishing trip. Gi-cheul asks Jung-bae to call Jun-mo (Seung-ho) with them. Jung-bae is not happy with the decision but Gi-cheul argues that they just wanted him to be on standby and would keep the mission a secret from him.

Gi-cheul also adds that if the police show up, they would have all the more reason to doubt Jun-mo (Seung-ho). Jung-bae asks Jun-mo to join them on the fishing trip and the trio gets ready to leave despite the rain. Jong-ryul is shocked that despite being in the group for longer, a newcomer like Jun-mo got to be a part of the fishing trip.

On their drive, Jung-bae calls Gi-cheul and lets him know his car has a flat tire and asks the two to go ahead. Soon Gi-cheul learns that he is being followed after a large number of cars dash into them. He asks Jun-mo to speed up and lose the guys but the car ends up stuck in the mud.

The goons from the Jaegon group, along with Kang Geon, attack Jun-mo and Gi-cheul who are still inside the car. A goon puts his knife on Gi-cheul’s throat while the latter struggles to take his gun out of the glove box. The episode ends with Jun-mo taking the gun from the glovebox and holding it to the goon’s head.

The Episode Review

This one was really an emotional watch because Jun-mo is struggling and the people he calls his friends are not making things easy for him. I really believe Eui-jeong should have informed Jun-mo about her mother’s death instead of letting him find out from elsewhere.

Had Gi-cheul not found out from his sources, she would have kept such a huge information a secret from her husband which is a bad look on her. The angst in this episode makes me worry that Eui-jeong will indeed cheat on Jun-mo. As Gi-cheul is clearly pursuing Eui-jeong openly, the knowledge that her husband is out of the picture means that Gi-cheul will not hold back making things more complicated for Jun-mo who is already struggling.

It is also clear that Jung-bae is the traitor who betrayed Gi-cheul and knowing full well that he will come out alive after this altercation makes me sure that Jun-mo would now be Gi-cheul’s new right-hand man.
