Recap Korean Drama "Welcome to Wedding Hell" Episode 4

May 30, 2022

Welcome to Wedding Hell (Marriage White Paper/결혼백서) is a Korean romantic drama TV series that focuses on the craziness that is marriage. Starring Lee Jin-uk, Lee Yeon-hee, and Song Jin-woo, alongside other cast members, the series has 12 episodes and Welcome to Wedding Hell episode 4 is titled Outfield Fly Ball and has a runtime of around 33 minutes.

It is said that finances can make or break marriages and it seems like Na-eun has taken this notion a bit too seriously. Still reeling from the last episode’s discovery, Welcome to Wedding Hell episode 4 has her overthinking and having nightmares regarding Jun-hyeong’s credit card bill. It’s honestly hilarious and also just a bit concerning that she’s thinking so much about this but isn’t asking her fiancé.

In today’s episode, the couple goes out for wedding dress shopping and Na-eun is already feeling overwhelmed thinking about the prices of everything. I am concerned that she is forgetting to have fun during this happy time of her life. Jun-hyeong, however, is having the time of his life watching his bride look stunning in her wedding dress. Jun-hyeong is really a sweet guy and dotes on Na-eun; he goes as far as to throw a bridal shower for Na-eun in place of her friends. It’s quite adorable.

As Jun-hyeong starts to plan for the bridal shower, he lies to Na-eun that he’s working overtime and can’t meet her. On the other hand, Na-eun immediately starts to overthink. Her friends try to help quash her fears without giving away the secret, but that really doesn’t help. She even asks Jun-hyeong why he’s so busy all of a sudden and no to one’s surprise, none of the excuses work. But thank god, this time around she tells him about the bank statement and asks him whether he’s trying to earn more money before the wedding.

When the moment of truth comes around, Jun-hyeong slyly takes her to the decked up hotel room. At first, she’s happy about the surprise but when Min-woo lets it slip that Jun-hyeong was the one who threw the party, there’s some awkwardness in the air and Na-eun asks to talk to Jun-hyeong alone effectively ending the party for then. After they talk it through and Jun-hyeong promises to keep a limit on his spending, they makeup quite sweetly and then start the party again.

Na-eun discusses with her friends how she should keep an eye on Jun-hyeong and should probably take his card and plan everything at this point. Hui-seon tells her to rather put some of her own money towards a house so that in the case of a divorce, she won’t be stuck trying to sell appliances. In the end, the girls do end up having fun, so at least Jun-hyeong’s extravagant spending didn’t go to waste!

I don’t know if I am in the minority here, but Na-eun seriously annoys me. I get it, you need to be realistic about your expectations when it comes to weddings. However, must you always be a party pooper and drone on and on about how much you don’t want to spend money on anything? Of course, don’t be like Jun-hyeong either – not having a budget is probably the worst thing that you can do to your bank balance. However, Na-eun’s insistence on not having fun is a bit much to take.

It’s also a little weird that Na-eun doesn’t enjoy things that Jun-hyeong does for her. Like, I get your concern but there’s a time and place for everything. Throwing everyone out to have a conversation about finances in the middle of a party isn’t really the right path to go down. It makes me sad every time she takes Jun-hyeong’s excitement several notches. And, on top of that, these are well-paid adults who are almost 40. It’s not like you’re a broke college student, chill out.

Hopefully Welcome to Wedding Hell doesn’t paint Na-eun in such a negative light. Both of them need to come to a middle ground where you don’t go broke after getting married or just constantly count bills every time you buy candy. I have also come to realise that Na-eun is just terrible at communication and too good at overthinking. The fact that she had nightmares about Jun-hyeong’s credit card statement is shocking to me. I feel like a lengthy discussion is extremely necessary regarding what they want and don’t want to invest in in terms of this wedding!

Although Welcome to Wedding Hell is supposed to be a comedy, light-hearted series, I am just feeling so concerned for these two people. I am unable to find humour in these moments because I just feel like they really need to probably postpone the wedding and just have several lengthy discussions about life. Oh, and also, not talk to their friends about their financial situations – that never solves anything.

It’s an enjoyable watch no doubt, but Welcome to Wedding Hell episode 4 just concerned me more than anything else.
