Recap Korean Drama "May It Please the Court 2022" Episode 1

Sep 27, 2022

May It Please the Court episode 1 starts on a rainy day as a row of black cars go down the road looking all intimidating. After they stop, out come several important-looking people, including Jang Ki-do and Noh Chak-hee. They are all going to Jang Sung-jin’s resting place, wherein everyone shows respect to Byung-chun’s late father.

Chak-hee and Byung-chun share a tender relationship, and although she is not his daughter, they share a tight bond. However, the others around her don’t seem to be too as forgiving and are rather dismissive and condescending of her.

Later on, at Jangsan Law Office, things are tense as Chak-hee enters. Everyone is apparently pretty scared of her, and thus when she gets an emergency call to leave immediately, things look up for the entire office!

Anyway, Chak-hee, out on the street, runs over a man, and it turns out he’s the guy she’s been searching for. Back at Jangsan, just as the partners talk about Chak-hee’s promotion and how she’s the best candidate for partner of the firm, a bunch of disgruntled people barge into the conference room, much to Oh Ha-ran’s delight.

After the excitement of the day with the con artist, she comes back to the office to prove that she has not been fudging her timesheet numbers. It, in turn, proves that she’s actually an exceptional employee who gives it her all to win a case. Interestingly, it turns out that she and her disgruntled client were in cahoots with each other, and this was just a way to prove her mettle.

Anyway, after this little titbit, the real problem comes in – Chak-hee gets a call from Lee Soon-young, who desperately wants to talk to her. Over the phone, she insists Chak-hee meet her and tells her that something took over her to murder her husband and that she doesn’t remember anything. However, Chak-hee asks her whether she’ll be able to afford her fees and when Soon-young tells her that she can’t, she asks her to get someone cheaper and never to call her.

We next meet Jwa Si-baek, a rather easygoing public defender who gulps down a birth control pill the minute after we meet, much to the pharmacist’s shock and confusion. He’s tracking the effects of the pills, but before we know too much about it, Chak-hee comes into his office and proposes to settle Kangsung Pharm’s birth control pill case.

Si-baek isn’t someone who will take bullying lying down and refuses to back down from the lawsuit. However, Chak-hee makes some excellent points and leaves after insulting Si-baek’s 3%-win rate. On her way back to the office, she can’t stop thinking about Joon-young’s cry for help and, after some thought, decides not to go down that road.

At court Si-baek and Chak-hee go up against each other, and in an interesting turn of events, it turns out that Si-baek’s client might have made a false report after her relationship with the CEO crashed and burned.  Chak-hee’s defence is impressive, but it doesn’t negate the fact that the pills do have side effects, and Soon-young is one of the victims. Jansang employs her to shut her childhood friend up in any way possible before the truth sees the light of day.

When she goes to the office later that day, everyone congratulates her, and she gets in line to be the partner. She’s clearly over the moon, and on the day she is finally able to achieve her dream, she gets arrested for assisting in Soon-young’s suicide.

May It Please the Court starts off rather interestingly with our leading lady being the most intriguing among all the other characters. She’s witty and sassy and has a certain charm to her that is quite infectious. Although there’s a lot going on in the first episode, it does hold on to your interest; Si-baek and Chak-hee’s dynamics, especially, will prove to be quite the effective watch as they eventually are pushed towards each other thanks to the shocking case.
