Jul 31, 2022

We start off Big Mouth episode 2 at the hospital as Chang-ho is getting taken to the emergency room after the horrible accident in the last episode. As he thinks back to his time in high school, it is not lost on anyone that he has been terribly unlucky throughout his life. However, it’s nice to hear that Mi-ho has always been by his side through it all. As he wakes up in the hospital, the sight is the same – his concerned wife is towering over him, asking him whether he is ok.

Meanwhile, a masked man secretly takes Chang-ho’s phone and the pendrive and gets rid of the car. Back at the hospital, Chang-ho is cuffed and taken away the moment he gets up on his own two feet after finding drugs in his blood test results. At the prison, realizing who drugged him and why, he asks to talk to Do-ha and afterwards tells the mayor how he wound up there and why.

The mayor asks him whether he talked to Gong Ji-hoon, to which Chang-ho promises to get everything done if he helps him get out. Unfortunately, Do-ha isn’t in the mood for negotiation anymore, which leaves him in prison, mentioning that it would be easier to talk to Ji-hoon.

Meanwhile, Gi-gwang’s office gets raided by the Regional Investigation Unit, who find tons of cash and gold inside, much to Gi-gwang’s shock and horror. Chang-ho, later, is taken to Gucheon Penitentiary, and he mentions that it’s not a good or safe place for people to be. The prison looks scary and it’s quite apparent that Chang-ho is going to have a very tough time.

On his first day in the prison, he is taken to Chae-bong, Jae-ho and Du-geun and instead of just staying quiet, he dares them to do anything against him and gets beaten red and blue. Meanwhile, Ji-hoon gets into a cold war with Do-ha’s wife Joo-hee, which gets interrupted when news breaks out that Chang-ho is Big Mouse. It takes Do-ha by surprise, and even Ji-hoon looks like he’s also pretty clueless about it.

At the prison, Chang-ho gets tortured immensely and eventually hung. As he dies in front of everyone, Ji-hoon calls the warden and informs him of the new development, which springs everyone into action. He is eventually resuscitated, and everyone is shocked at his tenacity to stay alive. Meanwhile, Mi-ho isn’t able to talk to Chang-ho, and she, too, gets the news that Chang-ho is being touted as Big Mouse everywhere.

An emotional confession in front of reporters and some heartbreaking sobs later, a now somewhat better Chang-ho is taken in for questioning, where he answers in the most debt-driven, everyday person answers to all the questions that the prosecutors ask him. As he is asked whether he is Big Mouse, Mayor Do-ha stands outside the interrogation room, listening intently to all of his answers.

Back at the prison, he gets into a fight with the three musketeers (as I will be calling them from now on), Chang-ho is showered with love and attention from his fellow cellmates. Elsewhere, a meeting between the greats results in Ji-hoon telling the three musketeers to not do anything until he can say definitively whether he is Big Mouse or not.

As Do-ha and Joong-lak discuss what they should do with the new development and the possibility and result of Chang-ho being Big Mouse, Mi-ho, Gi-gwang and Soon-tae go over the case to figure out how Chang-ho got into the accident and who could be framing him. Meanwhile, the entire prison is abuzz with conversation around Big Mouse and heated predictions about his real identity. So much heavy discussion ends in Chang-ho getting beaten during lunch again, and you can see the frustration growing in him.

Park Yoon-gab, having fun at the commotion, gets Chang-ho at the special cell and, after feeding him some gourmet food, asks him whether he truly is Big Mouse. The possibility of him being the famed criminal makes the warden all sweet and nice but when Chang-ho promises that that’s not the case, Yoon-gab sends him to solitary for calling him by his name.

Later, Mi-ho gets moved to Gucheon University Hospital, while Chang-ho asks Soon-tae to file divorce papers on his behalf so that if he is given the death sentence, at least loan sharks won’t hound his wife. Back at the cell, Chang-ho makes plans to expose the real perpetrators through his death and prove his innocence in the process – taking a drastic step in a situation that feels unwinnable.

Unfortunately for him, suicide doesn’t seem like a viable option. So, he tries to instigate Yang Chun-sik to get him to do the dirty deed. In another twist of fate, it turns out he has super strength and one punch lands the violent and feared gang leader on the ground. Next, he tries to instigate a death row inmate to kill him, but that too doesn’t turn out as expected, with the guy falling to the ground and sobbing for his mother after only a few hits.

Chang-ho next tries to escape from prison in order to get shot and killed. As luck would have it, this time around, it almost seems like his wish is finally coming true. The warden orders for him to be killed while keeping a close eye on him using the CCTVs. Chang-ho stands in the middle of the playground, screaming at the guards to shoot him, but his fate remains unclear as the episode ends on a cliffhanger.

Big Mouth Episode 2 Review

Still From Big Mouth Episode 2

Well, that was quite the episode, and I must mention that I have no idea where they are going with this. I can’t fathom who Big Mouse can be, and although I don’t think it’s Chang-ho, I do believe that it’s someone he probably knows. Furthermore, our protagonist is going through some changes in his life, and it’s only a matter of time before he will be able to find himself in prison.

Lee Jong-suk is absolutely phenomenal as the lawyer who seems to be turning into something that he’s not… or maybe something that he has always wanted to be? The scenes where he cries in the episode are heartbreaking to watch, especially in comparison to his jolly nature in the first episode.

Moreover, Big Mouse episode 2 is peppered with flashbacks of Chang-ho’s life with Mi-ho, which further drives a knife into our hearts. These moments also serve as sort of a break in between the rather bleak story. Prison is tough, but good god Chang-ho has it bad.
