Lies Hidden in My Garden 2023 K Drama Episode 2

Jun 27, 2023

Episode 2 of Lies Hidden in My Garden starts where we left off with Joo-ran discovering a dead body in her backyard. Only two fingers of the body’s hand are visible and Joo-ran is horrified to hear the doorbell ring.  She learns that Yoon-beom has come to her house to drop off the suitcase. As Sang-eun waits in the car, she goes through the woman’s phone from the glovebox and somehow drops it between the seats.

Meanwhile, Yoon-beom asks Joo-ran if he could drop off the bag inside for Jae-ho but Joo-ran claims that he was not home. Joo-ran tries calling her husband but is unable to reach him. She is scared but opens the door because Yun-beom insists. From the car, Sang-eun sees Joo-ran standing inside her house and notices how she’s wearing an identical scarf to the one Yoon-beom had gifted her.

Yoon-beom heads inside the house to drop off the bag. Yoon-beom takes a look around and points out the odd smell. Yoon-beom tries to inspect it but Joo-ran recalls how the dead body was exposed since she had dug it up. She tells Yoon-beom that she will not allow him to look around but he tries to manhandle her. Yoon-beom unties her scarf and scares her.

Joo-ran goes inside the house and tries calling Jae-ho but notices that Yoon-beom has been snooping around the house. She spots him outside one of the windows, taking photos of the building. Joo-ran is confused and asks Yoon-beom to leave. Yoon-beom asks Joo-ran to talk to Jae-ho about meeting him later that night for fishing.

Sang-eun struggles to take the phone out but Yoon-beom is too happy with his visit to Jae-ho’s house to notice. Yoon-beom laughs like a maniac and tells Sang-eun that soon, they too will be living in a house with a large yard. Jae-ho finally answers Joo-ran’s call and learns that Yoon-beom had left the bag out as well as the dead body Joo-ran had discovered.

Yoon-beom drops Sang-eun off at the supermarket to buy meat and alcohol for her mother. He texts Jae-ho a photo, demanding money from him in exchange. However, Jae-ho goes back home and inspects the “dead body” Joo-ran was talking about. Joo-ran is scared but Jae-ho tries to lighten the mood and claims that the hand she allegedly discovered is actually a rubber glove.

He reassures her that there wasn’t a dead body in their backyard and asks Joo-ran to continue taking her medicines. Joo-ran feels paranoid and runs out to dig up the body herself but Jae-ho grabs her and stops her. He tells her that whatever she was seeing, feeling and smelling were hallucinations since Joo-ran’s sister’s death anniversary was approaching. Jae-ho tries to reassure her and promises everything was okay.

At the same time, Jae-ho gets a text from Yoon-beom, demanding 500 million won from him over a photo of his house. Once Sang-eun is back from the supermarket, Yoon-beom chides her for spending so much money on meat and treating her mother so well. That night, Joo-ran and Jae-ho’s son Seung-jae is surfing the internet looking for ways in which a minor can be emancipated.

Jae-ho enters his room and Seung-jae switches the screen to a tutoring video. Jae-ho asks his son to drink some milk before going back to study. Then, Jae-ho tucks Joo-ran into bed and tells her that he was going night fishing with Yoon-beom. He tells her that the soil in the house has probably gone bad which led to the smell.

Joo-ran claims that she’s aware of the dead body stench because she has experienced the same thing when she discovered her sister, Young-ran’s body. Jae-ho asks Joo-ran to stop thinking about the traumatic moment and gets her to drink a fragrant tea to calm her nerves. Later that night, Joo-ran wakes up in bed, all by herself. She gets a nightmare that Yoon-beom was trying to attack her and goes to dump her scarf in the dustbin.

Joo-ran notices the glove in the bin and texts Jae-ho to be safe since it was raining that night. The episode moves on to the next day when Sang-eun hears the news of Yoon-beom’s death. She goes to the morgue to identify Yoon-beom’s body and confirms if her husband has really died. The next morning, Jae-ho is in a chirpy mood and tells Joo-ran that he did not go night fishing since it was raining a lot.

At breakfast, Jae-ho serves some milk to Seung-jae but Joo-ran tells him that their son is lactose intolerant. Seung-jae asks if he needs to attend the mass for Young-ran’s death anniversary but Jae-ho angrily claims that he should.

Meanwhile, Sang-eun takes the news of Yoon-beom’s death rather well at the police station. The cops interrogate Sang-eun about Yoon-beom’s mysterious death and tell her about his night fishing trip too. Sang-eun claims that Yoon-beom does not like fish but only went fishing with the director of the company she worked for. The cops learn that Yoon-beom’s director is Park Jae-ho, and Yoon-beom was fired from the company a month ago.

Leaving the police station, Sang-eun is confused and sends her aunt off to spend time by herself. Sang-eun goes to a restaurant and eats to her heart’s content when she gets a call from Yoon-beom’s brother. Sang-eun nonchalantly tells him about Yoon-beom’s death while ordering more food as she drinks caffeine during her pregnancy. There are boxes full of pharmaceutical goods outside Sang-eun’s house but she ignores them. She goes inside and starts clearing out all of Yoon-beom’s items and discovers a hidden diary.

Meanwhile, Joo-ran notices that Jae-ho’s shoes and car tires have mud all over them, which confuses her. The Park family goes to Church for mass where Hae-soo, their neighbour, is present. After mass, Jae-ho asks Joo-ran to be wary of Hae-soo while Seung-ho looks at her in the car behind theirs.

Just as the Park family is getting inside their basement, the cops show up to interrogate Jae-ho about Yoon-beom’s death. Jae-ho claims that he doesn’t need to go with Yoon-beom because of the rain but Joo-ran is sure that he’s lying. In her sleep, Joo-ran starts hallucinating about her sister’s death and wakes up to see Hae-soo in the house.

Hae-soo starts talking to Joo-ran about trivial things but the latter asks to be left alone because she isn’t feeling well. Hae-soo invites Joo-ran to hang out sometime and leaves. Sang-eun’s landlady tells her that Yoon-beom has not paid the house rent for two months. Sang-eun is confused since their house is on a lease but we soon learn that Yoon-beom has taken the lease money back and changed their agreement to a monthly rental basis.

That night, Joo-ran is unable to calm her nerves because she suspects that Jae-ho is lying. She checks the home CCTV footage from the night of Yoon-beom’s death and learns that the files had been deleted. Joo-ran is overwhelmed because of the lies and goes to Seung-jae’s room, asking him to stop drinking the milk Jae-ho was giving him.

When Jae-ho is back from work, Joo-ran asks about Yoon-beom and offers to join him at his funeral. Jae-ho is shocked that Joo-ran volunteered to go to the funeral. At the funeral home, Sang-eun turns on the spare phone that she has found in Yoon-beom’s car. The phone immediately starts buzzing with notifications but Sang-eun goes into the photo app.

There, she finds photos and videos of blackmail material that Yoon-beom used to threaten his victims. She also finds a photo of Jae-ho, threatening Joo-ran taken from their house window. She wonders if Yoon-beom was extorting money out of Jae-ho by exposing him. Sang-eun looks up Jae-ho’s contact information on the spare phone and sends a photograph.

The episode ends with Joo-ran opening an anonymous message on Jae-ho’s phone. The text contains a photo of a woman holding the spare phone and the sender asks “You know who I am right?”

The Episode Review

This episode seems to indicate that Sang-eun is doing everything in her power to lose the baby. It is possible that she is trying to get over her trauma from the way Yoon-beom domestically assaulted her and I feel like now with his death, this must be the first breath of fresh air for her. While this is a mystery drama, the scene where Sang-eun scoffs down her food after learning about her husband’s death is actually very comical.

However, this drama is unlike any other een over the years. Lies Hidden in My Garden is a proper thriller and it’s difficult to make any sense of what is happening. Sure Sang-eun could very well be the murderer of Yoon-beom, but Jae-ho is actually hiding something and I cannot put a finger on what it is.

Now that Joo-ran has caught on to the fact that Jae-ho is drugging bother her and their son, she seems to be catching onto his game. It is possible that Joo-ran knows that Jae-ho is messing with her medicine and forcing the hallucinations on her instead of helping deal with them. This drama is so well shot, cinematography-wise, but it is also very sinister too.
