Ku Hye Sun Loses Lawsuit Filed Against HB Entertainment + Former Agency Releases Statement

 

Ku Hye Sun has lost the lawsuit she filed against her former agency HB Entertainment.

According to legal circles on June 18, the Seoul Central District Court’s Civil Agreement Department 63 (presiding judge Park Chan Suk) dismissed all the charges and ruled against the plaintiff (Ku Hye Sun) in the suit for damages filed by Ku Hye Sun against her former agency HB Entertainment for approximately 107 million won (approximately $83,770) in compensation for profits generated from YouTube videos.

Later the same day, HB Entertainment further released the following official statement:

"Hello, this is HB Entertainment.

We will inform you regarding the results of the lawsuit against Ku Hye Sun.

1. On April 20, 2020, Ku Hye Sun paid HB for damages according to the arbitral award made by the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB) [that stated] she had to pay compensation for damages following the termination of her exclusive contract.

2. Afterwards, Ku Hye Sun filed for additional judgement disputing the validity of the above arbitral award, but this was dismissed on July 1, 2020, and the above arbitral award was finalized by the Supreme Court on April 16, 2021.

3. Apart from this, Ku Hye Sun filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court on February 18, 2020, and she made monetary claims to HB Entertainment, requesting [for us] to pay profits from YouTube videos, and she claimed copyright of the videos published on HB Entertainment’s channel.

However, on June 15, 2023, the judgement of the Seoul Central District Court dismissed all the groundless claims above made by the plaintiff (Ku Hye Sun).

Ku Hye Sun signed an exclusive contract with her ex-husband Ahn Jae Hyun’s agency HB Entertainment in June 2019. During the process of their divorce, Ku Hye Sun left the agency after expressing her desire to terminate her contract.

In April 2020, HB Entertainment and Ku Hye Sun’s legal representatives released conflicting statements regarding her contract termination. At the time, Ku Hye Sun’s legal representative claimed that the majority of the 330 million won (approximately $258,000) in compensation for damages requested by HB Entertainment was dismissed, and the verdict was reached that Ku Hye Sun should pay 35 million won (approximately $27,400).
