Court Rules In Favor Of “School 2021” In Lawsuit By Former Production Company

Dec 30, 2021

The Seoul Central District Court has dismissed a request for an injunction against KBS drama “School 2021” by former production company SR Pictures.

Earlier this year, SR Pictures filed for an injunction against “School 2021” production companies Kingsland and RaemongRaein, as well as broadcast network KBS, to cease production of the drama.

Last year, Kingsland and SR Pictures originally planned to co-produce the drama, which was then called “School 2020,” before their plans ultimately fell through. Kingsland then moved on to producing “School 2021” together with RaemongRaein, and the drama’s producers asserted that “School 2021” consisted of entirely new content and subject matter.

However, SR Pictures argued that because the contract for “School 2020” was terminated due to internal circumstances at Kingsland, they alone hold the production rights to “School 2021.” The company also presented a writing contract they previously signed with “A,” one of the co-writers of “School 2021,” as evidence that they hold the rights to the drama.

On December 29, the court ruled in favor of Kingsland, RaemongRaein, and KBS, ultimately dismissing SR Pictures’ request.

Explaining their decision, the court stated, “It could be argued that ‘School 2021′ has no relation whatsoever to SR Pictures’ writing contract with writer A, and even if the drama had been created according to the contract in question, it does not state anywhere in the contract that the copyright of the drama script is transferred to SR Pictures.”

Meanwhile, KBS commented on the court ruling by stating, “From now on, we will focus on production and doing a good job wrapping up the drama.”

“School 2021,” the eighth installment in KBS’s popular “School” drama series, tells the story of students chasing love, friendship, and their dreams at a vocational high school. The drama, which stars WEi’s Kim Yo Han, Cho Yi Hyun, Chu Young Woo, and Hwang Bo Reum Byeol, airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 p.m. KST.
