A Time Called You 2023 Episode 10

Episode 10 of A Time Called you begins with In-gyu telling Si-heon that Min-ju is dead because of him. Scarred Si-heon updates Jun-hee on the events and she doesn’t believe In-gyu would murder or commit suicide. Scarred Si-heon says it all began the day Min-ju died. He wants to live his life with Jun-hee but he cannot abandon In-gyu. She comforts him and says she will help. 

That night, before she travels, she asks about the engraving on their engagement rings. It says, “whenever your heart calls for me, I’ll go.” She tells him to promise that he will be by her side when she returns. He promises and she listens to the tape. 

She wakes up and realizes she couldn’t travel back. They ask for Chi-won’s help and he takes a different approach – the serial killer stopped after just 2 kills. So, what stopped him?

Si-heon goes to Noksan to ask their old teacher. He can’t remember but suggests going through the school archives. The teacher wonders if he’s looking into it because he thinks In-gyu is innocent. He also reveals the case was never investigated properly because In-gyu confessed but he did find something odd. A student was put in a psychiatric hospital right after the murders. He cannot remember the name as he says Chul or Cheo. 

Meanwhile, Chan-yeong visits Jun-hee and he sees her Googling the Noksan Murders. He worries about her insomnia and she tells him the truth. At that moment, the teacher remembers the student was Oh Chan-hui. They see that his student ID photo is of Chan-yeong 2.0.

Chan-yeong has a hard time understanding Jun-hee but he keeps asking her about it. She ends up telling him everything including how the cassette works – it takes you to a different time period, into the body of someone who looks alike. Suddenly, he asks for coffee and while she makes it, he listens to the tape. 

Meanwhile, Si-heon also notices that Chan-hui has a brother who was 10 back then – Oh Chan-yeong. In a flashback to 1998, Chan-yeong goes through Chan-hui’s belongings and sees photos of Min-ju. Chan-hui likes her because she is quiet like him. Chan-yeong is immediately obsessed with her and says Chan-hui should preserve those he likes like a butterfly. Chan-hui reprimands his brother but young Chan-yeong has a deranged look in his eyes.

When Jun-hee spots Chan-yeong listening to the tape with his eyes closed, it takes a few tries to wake him. He says he tried it out of curiosity but it didn’t work, he just fell asleep because of the song. He then asks her for food and she goes to the kitchen.

Si-heon tries to call her but Chan-yeong switches off her phone while she is distracted. Si-heon then calls Chi-won and updates him. He guesses that the murders didn’t happen again because Chan-hui committed them and then was locked up. Meanwhile, Chan-yeong says that he finally understands what happened to his brother back then and is annoyed that she interrupted him.

Turns out, he did travel back in time a few minutes ago when he pretended to sleep. He travels to the moment Chan-hui pushes Min-ju out of the way when she runs on the road when she thinks her mother and brother abandoned her. Chan-yeong takes over and he gets cocky and smug as he keeps asking her if she is fine and insists on accompanying her. She wants to check if her mom is at work and he says he knows a shortcut.

He then attacks and hits her. But before the killing blow, Jun-hee wakes him. At present, he suffocates her and she passes out. But turns out he doesn’t care about her. When he saw her in 2008 with Yeon-jun he thought it was Min-ju, the girl from his brother’s photograph that he had obsessed over. But as he got to know her, his excitement faded as she was not the same girl, unlike Min-ju who was afraid, she didn’t fear him and so he didn’t feel a rush.

Si-heon reaches home and Chan-yeong hides. Si-heon calls the cops on seeing Jun-hee unconscious and Chan-yeong comes out. When Si-heon asks him where he came from, he messes up his story. He finally gives up and simply attacks Si-heon. He shocks Si-heon by revealing the murders haven’t happened yet. He thanks Jun-hee for piecing it all for him and showing him the way and then stabs Si-heon multiple times. He runs away with the cassette and Min-ju’s diary as the cops show up. 

Alone he travels in time to the same time he almost made the killing blow. He gets angry that he hurt his pet as Min-ju bleeds. He is about to leave when he accidentally drops In-gyu’s hearing aid from his pocket. Turns out, In-gyu had misplaced it in school and Chan-hui had grabbed it. Chan-yeong then spends his time stalking Min-ju till he realizes that she is Jun-hee and smirks. 

At home, his mom begs him to talk to baby Chan-yeong for killing their dog. He tells his younger self it’s fine to treat people as pets too. He reveals he is from the future and laughs when baby Chan-yeong is confused. He then says he has to blend and act normal but only for the time being. He will understand why one day.

Meanwhile, Si-heon dies from his wounds and Jun-hee is furious. She wants to go back in time and save him. She and Chi-won figure out that Chan-yeong traveled to Chan-hui’s body and visit him in the mental hospital.

The real Chan-hui tells her that he could hear everything and they forced him. He wanted to stop the murders but he couldn’t. She realizes that the ‘they’ means 2023 Chan-yeong took 1998 Chan-yeong to witness the murders. Chan-yeong also killed Min-ju after Jun-hee leaves her body. 

Jun-hee breaks down on realising that it is because of her that he travelled back the first time. Her conversation with him about time travelling is the catalyst for the murders.

The cops tell her they have found Chan-yeong but it turns out he destroyed the cassette and the player before they stopped him. He is also furious that they caught him at the wrong moment (maybe hinting that he has probably not killed Min-ju yet). Jun-hee sees him being taken into custody and confronts him, blaming him for everything. He points out that he would have not time travelled or murdered anyone if she hadn’t told him anything in the first place. He laughs in her face while she looks disturbed.

The Episode Review

Episode 10 of A Time Called You goes from a bubbly time travelling rom-com to a proper murder mystery. The switch in genre feels seamless as they lay the foundation right from the beginning of the show. We did predict they would have to cram the mystery plot in the final chapter if the first half is all fluff. Well, they are doing that but it is done artfully so it doesn’t feel off. 

There was always something off with Chan-yeong right from the beginning. The way he seems excited around Jun-hee in 2008 but by 2023 he treats her normally makes sense now. He never cared for her and only wanted Min-ju. And poor Si-heon, none of his plans are working the way he wants. Now he’s dead, though we still have two more episodes to go so at least he isn’t dead-dead. Win lose?
