Recap Korean Drama "One Dollar Lawyer 2022" Episode 9

Oct 27, 2022

One Dollar Lawyer episode 9 starts with Ma-ri asking Ye-jin about Ju-yeong’s murder and whether the actual murderer was caught. The latter tells her that the murderer was never caught, and Ji-hun left the prosecution because too many eyes were on him there for him to solve the murder. Meanwhile, in the past, at the law firm, Ji-hun cries as he deposits 1000 won in the jar, reminiscing Ju-yeong.

Just then, Mu-jang gets there, and as he accepts his case, we see Ji-hun take on his present persona.

In the present, a sobbing and drunk Ma-ri gets transported to Ji-hun’s hands as Ye-jin makes a run from the responsibility. Ma-ri pouts at him as she blabbers something and then promptly falls asleep, much to Ji-hun’s disappointment.

The next day, on his way to work, Mu-jang’s truck dies on the way and in the office, he responds to an ad for used cars that Ma-ri warns him will be a scam. When Ji-hun gets there later, Ma-ri’s extra attention makes him uneasy and then, in a rather genius stroke of product placement and promotion, Ji-hun insists on making his own coffee.

Elsewhere, Mu-jang goes to buy the used car and after some initial chitchat and driving around with the cars, he totally and thoroughly gets scammed into buying a bad car that breaks down within the first few minutes of him buying it.

Back at the office, Ji-hun has had enough of Ma-ri’s niceness and asks her what is going on with her. He then summarises that it must be because she is trying to gain favours and is thus kissing his ass to learn more from him. Unfortunately for Mu-jang, he asks for a refund but gets nothing but a threat to his life. Now heartbroken at the loss he incurred, he has no other option but to think back to his family’s happiness just that morning.

The next morning, Ji-hun meets up with Mu-jang after being concerned about him not coming to work, and the three of them later devise a plan to get Mu-jang his refund. Ji-hun goes to the same people and asks to buy a used car as well. However, he insists on buying the car that they let him a test drive. After failing to convince him otherwise, the guy makes a run for it, with Ji-hun giving chase.

In the end, Ma-ri apprehends the guy after running in high heels and throwing Ji-hun’s shoe at him.

When they finally get a hold of the guys, Ji-hun comes up with another plan – to nab the boss of the entire operation so that they can pay for scamming everyone before Mu-jang. Thanks to Ma-ri’s spunk in front of the boss, they do get jobs at the office, after which Ji-hun starts to investigate its workings.

Ji-hun gets to hear snippets of the boss’s conversation with some shady people, and lastly, he hears that the boss is getting investigated by a prosecutor. Unfortunately, there’s little to nothing Ye-jin can do right now about the case, considering it’s technically not illegal to sell a 10-year-old car for the price of a new one. Either way, the day comes with some results for Ji-hun and his team.

The next day at the used car lot, Ji-hun takes up the challenge to get close to the head and promises to sell a very expensive car. Unfortunately for him, out of the office, he comes across Min-hyeok, who wants to buy a car. He easily scams him Min-hyeok, impressing the boss in the process, and Min-hyeok, as it turns out, actually did mean to buy the car as he straight-away goes to Ye-jin and his colleagues who are waiting for him.

Although a shocked Min-hyeok tells Ye-jin about Ji-hun’s side job, it turns out that Ji-hun had already told Ye-jin of the plan the night before and had planted a tracker on one of the bills. Thanks to the joint effort, the prosecutors are able to track the money to an underground parking lot wherein Min-hyeok takes the responsibility of going after the bad guys after completing a bizarre ritual, only for Ye-jin to remind him that they are massively outnumbered.

As the bosses gather to exchange money, they are blocked off and stopped from escaping by Ji-hun, who makes a rather terrific scene of not being able to move his car thanks to being scammed with a bad one. On the other hand, the chairman tries to get out of the building using other routes, but he, too, gets nabbed by Ye-jin.

One Dollar Lawyer Episode 9 Ending
As the issue ends, the three colleagues go out for a celebratory dinner while that night, a man gets injected with something dangerous by a man in black under a rather shady bridge.

The next day, Ji-hun gets a visit from the same guy who attacked the man the previous night, and it turns out to be someone Ji-hun knows rather thoroughly.

One Dollar Lawyer Episode 9 Review
Man, what a hilarious episode. I think Ji-hun’s past story really helped us understand the kind of man he is. Previously, he was just a goofy guy who does absolutely odd things and had an unconventional way of going about it. However, after knowing everything, there’s an undertone of respect and relatability to his antics that, I feel, wasn’t previously there.

The episode is honestly hilarious, and coming out of three back-to-back emotionally heavy episodes, this one seems like a breath of fresh air. Watching Ji-hun in his usual elements feels like a welcome change, and his over-the-top antics feel great. The way he jumped over that car was priceless. Also, Ma-ri’s character, having softened up after the exposition dump, also seems funnier in this episode somehow.

I guess we have all changed just a bit thanks to the really good storytelling in the past couple of episodes that have, furthermore, made us miss the first few rather silly episodes. It all makes sense now, guys. Ji-hun’s rather morose demeanour during episodes 4 and 5. It’s easier to catch these small moments now after learning the context.

Honestly, I have started really enjoying this series. It’s a bummer that they have reduced the number of episodes all of a sudden.
