Recap Korean Drama "Adamas" Episode 8

Aug 18, 2022

Adamas episode 8 starts with Woo-sin typing away on his laptop, deep in thought – he eventually prints the manuscript out and names it “In the Name of the Mother”. In the next scene, Hyun-jo green lights the My First Gun initiative – a series of commercials to boost firearm sales in the country. He is excited at the prospect and, before he leaves the conference room, lets the others know to support Ms Kwon, who will be taking care of the 80th-anniversary celebrations.

Curiously, in front of Jae-kyu, when he brings up the Adamas and beefing up security around it, his father asks him to stay out of things that don’t concern him. Hyun-jo, however, isn’t happy with the way he is being treated and puts on his big boy pants to tell Section Chief Jeong to take care of security around Jung Young-ja without Leader Lee’s knowledge.

Meanwhile, Seo-hee realises that all the records and evidence that she had gathered have disappeared from her home. At Gong Dae-chul’s home, Sun makes an appearance to know where Su-hyeon is and, after getting no answer, mentions that since he doesn’t know, the meeting is a headache for them both. In the meantime, Su-hyeon goes to meet Chang-woo and realises that he’s being kept in solitary illegally.

Unfortunately for him, no amount of mentioning the law will make Chang-woo meet him – the latter is scared out of his mind. As if this setback wasn’t enough, Seo-hee and Ms Lee find out that all of Chang-woo’s case files have disappeared. We see the autopsy report at Team A’s office, where it gets shredded, and Leader Lee is delighted to find a DNA test report.

Sadly, Sun tortures Dae-chul to find out where Su-hyeon can be but comes to a conclusion herself that he must be going to his father’s grave because the murder weapon left a scar behind in his eye which can replace the missing autopsy report. We do jump to seeing Su-hyeon and Mr Baek going to the family gravesite, but not before seeing Sun murdering Dae-chul.

Meanwhile, Woo-sin and Tae-sung talk about how they can catch the chairman if, as Seo-hee mentions, he didn’t kill his father. The only way is to tie him to Ms Kwon’s son’s death, and that can only happen if they can win Ms Kwon over. Woo-sin, thus, was writing that manuscript from the first scene. Smartly, he puts the manuscript in his bag and has Ms Oh deliver it to Ms Kwon – what an interesting way to put it in her hands without drawing unnecessary suspicion toward himself!

Woo-sin’s plan works, and Ms Kwon can’t believe what she is reading – it’s word-for-word her life, but not in the way she knew the truth to be. The manuscript brings back painful memories for Ms Kwon, as she thinks back to when her son wanted to go to college, and she was vehemently against it. As we see past wounds opening up, Woo-sin and Hye-soo talk about this entire plan, after which she asks him who else is helping him with his plan.

He denies it, but she isn’t stupid, and she mentions that this is the exact situation in which Ms Kwon and Kwon Jae-kyu will find themselves in – a difference in opinion, the beginning of distrust. Woo-sin realises that he is losing one of his confidants in the house but can’t come to lie to her. Hye-soo walks away after calling the entire situation rather pitiful.

Back to Su-hyeon, he reaches the gravesite to find his father’s grave vandalised, or well, newly made. As Mr Baek laments the loss of another lead, Su-hyeon smiles and tells him that the gravestones were switched recently and it’s obvious who did it – we see Woo-sin having a drink with his father at the latter’s grave, which is right beside the other one, and it’s a poignant moment which points to how smart and resourceful Woo-sin is.

As they come back to the car, all the while smiling as to Woo-sin’s smart thinking, they hear a phone ringing inside the car. Going to the truck puts them in front of Du-cheol’s bloody corpse and a phone ringing on his cheek. Su-hyeon is absolutely shocked at the sight, as expected, and as he wonders what to do while sobbing, Sun looks on from a distance, impatiently waiting for him to pick up the phone.

When he finally does, and he asks her who she is – Sun tells him her name and immediately makes the car explode. Su-hyeon and Mr Baek’s fates are not known, but Sun mentions that she feels bad killing him like this.

At Haesong, a chilling Woo-sin fills Ms Kwon’s mind with doubts surrounding her son’s death. It’s as if he has thought through this entire interaction, right down to the pauses and stares that he will give. He’s cool and collected and doesn’t try to deny any of her accusations. In fact, he adds to them so that the story seems genuine.

Unfortunately for him, Ms Kwon starts laughing and tells him that she doesn’t feel any attachment to her son; so, if he’s trying to harass her using him, he’s mistaken that she’d be phased in any way. It seems like Kwon Soon-yi isn’t taking any of his manipulations and asks him to leave while he still has the time.

However, Woo-sin can’t stop thinking about how this interaction played out. He’s curious that Soon-yi doesn’t take her son’s name even once and always puts the Jae-kyu first in every sentence, indicating that he’s someone who is extremely close to her. Back in her room, Ms Kwon flips through her son’s album, and Woo-sin realises that her attachment to her son is because of guilt.

He barges into her room and tells her that she can’t mention any of this to the chairman since he will start to doubt her. Ms Kwon starts to lose her cool with Woo-sin as she asks him why he’s doing this now after so many years and that the chairman can’t have anything to do with her son’s death. Woo-sin catches on to that line, but before he can ask her his doubts, she forces him to leave her room. Outside, he mentions out loud that she knew all along.

As news reaches the security room that the ceremony will take place in Haesong itself, Woo-sin and Tae-sung discuss how they can get the Adamas to be shipped back home without it getting recrafting. Meanwhile, Ms Kwon looks out of her room to the tree – Woo-sin has successfully made her think about things that she had pushed back to the back of her mind.

Meanwhile, Tae-sung mentions that bringing the Adamas back home is probably a bad idea since Team A is terrifying, and it’s best if he stays out of it – in the worst-case scenario, they won’t be able to protect him. Curiously, as Tae-sung goes outside, Woo-sin follows him and tells him to ask SIH to dig into Chang-woo – a man who knows it all but someone Team A won’t touch. As they have this conversation in the open, Hye-soo finds out who Woo-sin’s other companion is in the house.

When it comes to Hye-soo, we see a flashback where she talked to Woo-sin’s mother and told her that Chang-woo didn’t kill her husband. Curiously, she had mentioned that they should leave Chang-woo alone; he has been harassed enough. Back in the present, the conversation comes to Hye-soo’s mind, and she calls someone to know get to know something.

Meanwhile, the police find Su-hyeon and Mr Baek. The latter seems to be too far gone to do anything while Su-hyeon gets transferred to the hospital – there’s still hope for him. As news reaches SIH, Sun waits outside SIH for them to come out of the building. Inside, Hyuk-pil doesn’t let a very emotional Seo-hee leave (because that man can see the future) because he knows that the people who attacked him are waiting outside.

As the doctors fail to resuscitate Su-hyeon, Leader Lee reveals that Chang-woo is indeed the twins’ father. At Haesong, Hye-soo tells Woo-sin that she knows that the chairman didn’t kill his father; if he did, Chang-woo wouldn’t be alive right now. Woo-sin wonders out loud why they are keeping Chang-woo alive anyway, and it seems like Hye-soo knows the answer as well.

At Team A HQ, Leader Lee is delighted at the revelation and mentions that waiting for 22 years has been worth it. At the prison, Chang-woo asks the guard to tell Leader Lee that his senior wishes to meet him.

Adamas Episode 8 Review

Still From Adamas Episode 8

Ok, this is by far the most thrilling episode of the show, and I don’t mean that lightly. It’s a tight episode filled with shocking revelations and twisted emotions. From Ms Kwon’s son’s death to Sun’s maniacal killing methods – Adamas is clearly not kidding around.

The slow burn produces a rather interesting and thought-provoking episode, and although it was spoiled from before that Chang-woo is Woo-sin and Su-hyeon’s father, I totally erased that fact from my mind. Thus, finding it out again is absolutely thrilling.

Plus, how much trauma must you have to know that someone murdered your son for his body parts and still be loyal to them beyond compare? Hwang Jung-min, in her portrayal of Kwon Soon-yi, is simply great – she’s ruthless and without empathy, but bits and pieces of her past show her to have had a rather sad life. It’s a mix of hatred and sympathy that you feel for her, and Jung-min brings out the nuances of her character so well.

After every episode, I am in awe of Woo-sin and how interesting his character is. You’d expect the prosecutor to think a mile ahead, but there’s something about thriller writers that no one can compare with! Shameless fangirling aside, Woo-sin is the methodical one, and every moment, you are made aware of it. He’s thought these things through, and his calm and collected demeanour goes well inside the walls of Haesong.

All in all, I was arrested throughout the runtime of the episode. Let’s hope, with the 80th anniversary fast approaching, the pace keeps being deliciously torturous!
